For a 7-day cruise you need a compact list; for a long cruise or a World Tour you need layers, laundry rotation and clothing for several climates. This shared Costa–MSC guide includes a printable checklist, documents, medicines, clothing, cabin items and useful accessories.
Use this list for a 7-day cruise, then adapt it for a long cruise by planning laundry and adding only the climate-specific layers you need.
Quantities are indicative: adjust them for itinerary, season, personal needs, theme nights and access to laundry.
The basic packing method is the same for Costa and MSC: choose quantities according to duration, use laundry to rotate garments, and adapt layers to the actual itinerary. Cruise-line baggage rules, theme nights and onboard services should always be checked for the specific sailing.
Practical multi-climate example: the Costa World Tour 2026-27 leaves Civitavecchia on 24 November 2026 and returns on 13 April 2027. Its route crosses cold, tropical, humid and windy areas, austral summer and northern winter. We use it below only as a concrete example of how to build a layered suitcase for a very long cruise.
This table is a practical case study based on the Costa World Tour 2026-27 itinerary, from Civitavecchia on 24 November 2026 to Civitavecchia on 13 April 2027. The packing method remains valid for MSC and other long cruises: replace these climates with those of your own itinerary.

The right luggage is not the largest one, but the most manageable one: easy to move, easy to store and organized enough to handle several months of travel without turning the cabin into a wardrobe.
A good trolley should not only hold the clothes, but also help manage them: light items on top, warmer clothing grouped in packing cubes or soft organizers, room for practical accessories and a little spare space for items bought during the trip. This keeps the suitcase efficient from embarkation to the final return home.
T-shirts, breathable shirts, shorts, light trousers, swimwear and clothes suitable for warm and humid climates.
Long trousers, light sweaters, shirts, a windproof jacket and clothes for windy sea days or cooler evenings.
Packable down jacket, fleece, thermal layer and scarf or neck warmer for New York, Japan and Korea.
For a long cruise, the real question is not only how many clothes to pack, but which fabrics to choose. Wrinkle-resistant, easy-care or no-iron garments are designed to crease less inside the suitcase and return to shape more easily once hung in the cabin.
They are often made from technical travel fabrics, polyester or polyamide blends, cotton-polyester mixes, light stretch fabrics or fine merino blends. The name may change on the label: wrinkle-resistant, easy care, quick dry, travel fabric or no iron. The idea is the same: less creasing, faster drying and easier rotation during the cruise.
Quick-dry T-shirts, light polos, wrinkle-resistant shirts, travel trousers and garments that can be washed, hung and reused without looking crushed.
🧺 Easy rotationPure linen, thick cotton, very thin viscose and delicate formal shirts can look beautiful, but they crease easily and may require more laundry care.
👔 More delicateIn the cabin you should not rely on irons or steamers. Choosing the right garments before departure is the simplest way to reduce creases and save space.
🚢 Practical onboardTo check everything before embarkation, you can also use the cruise departure checklist: useful for documents, medicines, chargers, clothing and practical accessories.
Select “Print or save as PDF” in the checklist. In the browser print window, choose a printer or the “Save as PDF” option.
As a guide, pack 5-7 tops, 3-4 bottoms, 7-8 sets of underwear, one or two swimsuits, one smart outfit, a light layer and two comfortable pairs of shoes. Adjust quantities for weather, theme nights and laundry.
Choose light mix-and-match clothes, mid-season layers, a few packable warm items, personal medicines, documents, chargers, adapters, cabin items and practical accessories for excursions and sea days.
Only partly. The route moves from European autumn and winter to tropical climates, austral summer, winter in Japan and Korea, and then back toward Africa and Europe in spring.
No. A lightweight packable down jacket, fleece, thermal layer and windproof jacket are more practical and take less space.
Yes. Easy-care clothes crease less, dry faster and make laundry rotation easier, especially on a long cruise.
